Lisa Bukreyeva’s photo book, “Here They Build Houses From Ashes,” draws an intimate yet boundlessly expansive picture of everyday life for civilians in liberated frontline communities in Ukraine. The book explores daily routines that seem to defy logic but sustain human dignity. It’s the story of ruined places where everything seems almost normal, if you don’t look closely. But as soon as you pause to look, the danger and darkness emerge.
The book is 160 pages with 99 photographs. It measures 15 x 22 cm.
The FotoEvidence Association, in partnership with the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers (UAPP), launched FotoEvidence Ukraine, an initiative dedicated to supporting Ukrainian photographers and preserving Ukrainian culture. Through the creation of photobooks, this project documents the Russian invasion of Ukraine since 2014, ensuring these visual records reach libraries, safeguarding history for future generations.
“Here They Build Houses From Ashes” is a product of the FotoEvidence Ukraine initiative. Developed in collaboration with Lisa Bukreyeva, this photobook responds to the profound challenges posed by the Russian invasion. Its publication has been made possible with the support of the Open Society Foundations and the International Renaissance Foundation.
